BREAKING: Six Flags America To Permanently Close Following The 2025 Season

In a major announcement that marks the end of an era for East Coast theme park enthusiasts, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation (NYSE: FUN) revealed plans to permanently close Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor at the end of the 2025 season. The company will begin marketing the approximately 500-acre Maryland property for redevelopment, signaling a strategic shift in its long-term growth plan.

A Strategic Realignment for the Six Flags Brand

Six Flags, the largest amusement park operator in North America, stated that the decision follows a comprehensive portfolio review. President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman emphasized that the property no longer aligns with the company’s strategic vision.

“After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment,” – Richard Zimmerman.

The company has partnered with CBRE, a global leader in commercial real estate services, to facilitate the sale and redevelopment of the land.

Honoring a Local Landmark’s Legacy

For decades, Six Flags America and its companion water park Hurricane Harbor have served as a family destination in Prince George’s County, drawing millions of guests from across the Mid-Atlantic. The parks are expected to operate through Sunday, November 2, 2025, offering one final season of thrills, water slides, and nostalgic experiences.

Zimmerman acknowledged the emotional weight of the decision:

“This was a difficult decision, and we recognize the impact it will have on our Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor park associates and guests… This final season will be an opportunity to celebrate the decades of fun that guests have enjoyed at the property.” – Richard Zimmerman

Supporting Employees Through the Transition

Six Flags America currently employs around 70 full-time associates. The company has committed to providing severance packages and other benefits to all eligible staff affected by the closure. No layoffs are expected before the conclusion of the 2025 operating season.

Impact and What’s Next

Despite the closure, Six Flags expects no material impact on its 2025 financial results. Instead, the company will continue focusing on optimizing its portfolio and expanding its footprint in higher-performing markets.

All 2025 season passes and pre-purchased tickets for Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor will remain valid through the final day of operation.

The announcement does not include immediate plans for the property’s redevelopment post-sale, but with CBRE’s involvement and the park’s prime location between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, strong interest is anticipated.
