Yesterday was a quiet day in the Mid-Atlantic states. Six Flags America, Six Flags Great Adventure, and Kings Dominion were all closed Saturday April 12th, 2025 due to some inclement weather the parks were experiencing.

What inclement weather did they receive? Let’s take a look!
What Inclement Weather Did Kings Dominion Experience On Saturday 4/12?

It was a pretty nice spring day in Doswell, Virginia today, albeit cloudy, the high temperature was in the mid 50s.

The rain for the inclement weather they were expecting to experience? Non-existent.

Kings Dominion announced at 5:13 p.m. on Friday, April 11th, that the park would be closed on Saturday, 4/12. This is the worst offender of the bunch, giving guests less than 18 hours’ advance to re-plan their Saturday. They probably all decided to go to Busch Gardens Williamsburg instead, which was open 10am-10pm with no issues because it didn’t rain. There wasn’t any inclement weather to be had.
What Inclement Weather Did Six Flags America Experience On Saturday 4/12?

Moving about 100 miles north, Six Flags America was a little chillier, with a high of 50 degrees, but it was a nice spring day in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, nonetheless.

The park was closed, and it rained a total of .15 inches for the day. Keep in mind, the park was planned to open 5 hours after the rain had stopped for the day.

Six Flags America announced at 12:33 p.m. on Friday, April 11th, that the park would be closed on Saturday, 4/12, which actually was the park’s opening day for the season.
What Inclement Weather Did Six Flags Great Adventure Experience On Saturday 4/12?

Of all the parks, Six Flags Great Adventure had the worst weather this weekend. The high never reached 40 degrees, which means some rides likely wouldn’t have opened since it was too cold.

The main thing that shuts these parks down during early spring operations is those “April Showers” that bring May flowers. Great Adventure received .8 inches of rain. A reasonable amount, until you look at when it didn’t rain.

Six Flags Great Adventure announced at 11:09 a.m. on Friday, April 11th, that the park would be closed on Saturday, 4/12.
Why Is Six Flags Not Being Honest About Closures?
It is not uncommon for Six Flags to close parks for inclement weather, but it’s not this common for them to collectively close, and for them to not really have any weather to begin with.

Even in the forecast in the days leading up, the weather didn’t look that bad, definitely not enough to amount to a closed Saturday at the parks.

Likely this more has to do with the probability of associate call-outs. Kings Dominion, for example, used to have a large full-time team at the park.

They cut a lot of full-time positions from the park this winter, leaving many associates with no time to find a new job or a new place to work. Kings Dominion was not the only park to do this in the chain after their Cedar Fair and Six Flags “merger of equals” last year.

Many of the Six Flags parks have cut budgets this year. This is why it is likely that Kings Dominion will not have Winterfest this year (based on passes being sold without the event being in the language).

So is this really due to weather? Or other factors like staffing and budget cuts? Keep in mind Busch Gardens Williamsburg was open on Saturday with no issues. Does this signal trouble ahead for the new Six Flags?
